Missionaries (Religious preachers, Moballighin) should understand that they are carrying out the duties of the prophets. Prophets have two main roles: they serve as educators of scripture and wisdom, and they are the purifiers of the souls. It's essential not to overlook the importance of scholarly work, teaching, and discussions during the period of spreading the message.
Esra News Agency: At the conclusion of his lesson on Islamic jurisprudence today [05 March 2024], Grand Ayatollah Javadi Amoli, mentioning the deployment of missionaries during the holy month of Ramadhan, emphasized, "As you embark on your preaching mission, remember that you as teachers and great scholars are continuing the work of the prophets."
He explained: The verse in Surah Al-Tawbah,
[“And the believers should not all go out to fight. So, why should not of every group of them, a party go forth, that they should gain sound knowledge in religion, and that they may warn their folk when they return to them, so that they may beware.” (Verse 122)] assigns the responsibilities of the prophets to you. Prophets have a dual mission: to impart knowledge from the scriptures and wisdom, and to purify souls. When this verse depicts the mission “Go Forth”, it instructs missionaries to fulfill these two crucial tasks.
He elaborated further: The verse doesn't simply state,
﴿فَلَوْلَا نَفَرَ مِنْ كُلِّ فِرْقَةٍ مِنْهُمْ طَائِفَةٌ لِيَتَفَقَّهُوا فِي الدِّينِ﴾
" So, why should not of every group of them, a party go forth, that they should gain sound knowledge in religion, " The phrase
﴿لِيَتَفَقَّهُوا﴾
"To gain sound knowledge" pertains to
﴿وَيُعَلِّمُهُمُ الكِتابَ وَالحِكمَةَ﴾
“and to teach them the Book (Holy Scriptures, the Quran) and wisdom” (Jumu’ah, verse 2), but it goes beyond, urging them to return and ﴿وَلِيُنْذِرُوا قَوْمَهُمْ﴾ "and they must warn their people." Prophets also have two key duties: First, ﴿وَيُعَلِّمُهُمُ الكِتابَ وَالحِكمَةَ﴾ “To teach them the scriptures and wisdom”. Second, ﴿وَيُزَكّيهِم﴾ “and to purify them” (the individuals); Allah the Almighty encapsulated these aspects concisely in this verse with the statement:
﴿لِيَتَفَقَّهُوا فِي الدِّينِ وَلِيُنْذِرُوا قَوْمَهُمْ إِذَا رَجَعُوا إِلَيْهِمْ﴾
"They should become learned in religion and warn their people upon their return."
His Eminence advised not to overlook scientific work, lessons, and discussions even during preaching days. He suggested whether you write a pocket-size practical treatise (Risalah Amaliyah; On Islamic Ritual Rules) or a pocket-size printed one, so to take it with you wherever you go, read and study it, take the Howzah (Seminary) with you! Otherwise, it's deemed challenging for anyone to abandon learning and studies for over a month or forty days. When visiting places wherein there are students of religion, teach them a lesson [of religious subjects]. If you were alone, ensure to have these small treatises from esteemed scholars like Shaykh Mufid to our Master, Imam [Khomeini]. They have a variety of treatises in Persian or Arabic, brief or detailed, covering jurisprudence, fundamentals, narratives, and interpretations, enriching your endeavors to be -God willing- scientific.
He concluded by stating, «سِیرُوا عَلَی اسْمِ اللَّهِ» "Travel upon the name of Allah," God willing, return with divine preaching, divine system, and safeguarding the divine system.
