Grand Ayatollah Javadi Amoli: Weekly Session on Ethics

The Education of Society Must Be Based on Human Essence / Reforming Society Through Kindness and Goodness Instead of Harsh Measures

Esra News Agency: The weekly ethics lesson by Grand Ayatollah Javadi Amoli was held today (Wednesday) at the Grand Mosque of Qom in person, with the attendance of various groups of the public from all walks of life.

In this session, Grand Ayatollah Javadi Amoli elaborated on Wisdom 157 and 158 of Nahj al-Balagha.

His Eminence stated: Imam Ali (PBUH) in wisdom 157 of Nahj al-Balagha states:

«قَدْ بُصِّرْتُمْ إِنْ أَبْصَرْتُمْ، وَ قَدْ هُدِيتُمْ إِنِ اهْتَدَيْتُمْ، وَ أُسْمِعْتُمْ إِنِ اسْتَمَعْتُم»

"Indeed, you have been made aware if you care to see, and you have been guided if you seek guidance, and you have been made to hear if (only) you care to lend your ears"; we have explained the positions and the path, what you need to see, you have seen, what you needed to hear, you have heard, but the acceptance and understanding of it depends on the individual's will; similar discussions are found in Sermon 20 of Nahj al-Balagha; this means that divine messages and guidance have been sufficiently conveyed, and now it depends on the individual whether they have an attentive ear to hear and understand. In fact, if people truly pay attention to the messages and see, they will reach understanding and guidance.

He further stated: In Wisdom 158, the Imam says:

«عَاتِبْ أَخَاكَ بِالْإِحْسَانِ إِلَيْهِ، وَ ارْدُدْ شَرَّهُ بِالْإِنْعَامِ عَلَيْهِ»

"Reprimand your brother with kindness towards him, and repel his evil with goodness towards him"; the luminous statement of the Imam, peace be upon him, is that if someone speaks ill of you, and you immediately responded in the same way, that is a bodily reaction, a natural response, but if you prevent evil with goodness, that is the act of human essence.

The esteemed master stated: When someone does wrong, they should be treated with kindness, generosity, and respect. Instead of responding to wrongs with more wrongs, one should prevent wrongdoing through goodness and politeness. If you are mistreated, respond with generosity and kindness, as this is in accordance with human essence and has far greater effects than natural and harsh responses.

He emphasized that society should be nurtured according to human essence, not through force, coercion, or immorality, but through forgiveness, nobility, greatness, majesty, and kindness. Amir al-Mu'minin (The Commander of the believers), Imam Ali (peace be upon him) states: The first action in response to the wrongdoing of others is to prevent it with politeness, kindness, generosity, dignity, and friendship.

His esteemed one clarified that the first solution for reform is to approach through human essence (divine nature). Only when these methods prove ineffective should other measures, such as strict actions, be employed. Society should be educated in accordance with human essence; enjoining good and forbidding wrong, if done correctly and through natural methods, can have a more significant impact.

He expressed: This luminous statement of the Imam, peace be upon him, indicates that if you wish to prevent wrongdoing, you should enjoin good and forbid wrong. There is a way to do this, and that way is to prevent wrongdoing through goodness. If society wants to achieve reform, it must use methods based on human essence, not the methods based on human [worldly] nature (such as instinctively based reactions).

He added that the Quran and Nahj al-Balagha contain directives for the reform of society based on human essence, which should be implemented in social and moral behaviors.

Grand Ayatollah Javadi Amoli, in another part of this session, emphasized the necessity of self-knowledge and attention to human essence in worship and connection with God, stating that a person must establish a private connection with the Almighty in his/her prayers and acts of worship to achieve spiritual growth.

He pointed out the importance of the spiritual journey and practice in accordance with human essence and the impact of blessed months on this journey, stating that all individuals are obligated to consider the specific years and months, and during these months (such as months of Rajab, Sha’ban, Ramadhan, etc.), they should strengthen their worship to move towards God. The month of Sha'ban is an opportunity to draw closer to God and enhance the spiritual connection with the Prophet (peace be upon him and his household) and his family (peace be upon them). One should take advantage of Sha'ban to reach Ramadhan, and in this path, by understanding the essence of worship and strengthening the connection with God, one can attain a higher rank in spiritual journey.
